4A St Cloud Times Databank Thursday, May 12, 1994 Study: Plunger may help heart attack victims Health tically significant when the research was stopped. "The reality is the longer we wait to perform this study outside a hospital setting, the longer the public will wait to have this method available," said Dr. Keith Lurie, a University of Minnesota cardiologist who co-wrote the study in Wednesday's edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association. "We're talking about a million cases of cardiac arrest a year. It's critical we find out if we can improve long-term survival," he said.

The $200 suction device, called the CardioPump, attaches to a patient's chest and unlike standard CPR forces blood into the chest cavity. The plunger, which was developed by the University of California at San Francisco, is operated manually by a rescuer, much like standard CPR. It weighs 1.4 pounds and has a suction cup attached to a round, flat handle for pushing. Researchers from the University of Minnesota studied 77 sudden cardiac arrest patients who received standard CPR and 53 on which the CardioPump was used. All were initially treated by St.

Paul, firefighters. Of those who received medical attention within 10 minutes of collapsing, 59 percent treated with the CardioPump arrived alive at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center, compared with only 33 percent treated with standard CPR researchers said. Thirty-eight percent of the patients who were treated with the device were eventually discharged by the hospital, compared with 20 percent for standard CPR. The rest died in the hospital After only 10 months of the planned two-year study, researchers were told by the FDA to quit because the Cardio Pump carried a "significant risk" and required a patient's informed consent, Lurie said.

FDA spokesman Don McLearn said the researchers should have filed an application to do tests on humans. "A tongue depressor doesn't need that kind of clearance, but a tongue depressor is not used in such a situation of risk," McLearn said. Study coauthor Dr. Linda Ann Long said the form was not filed because "it had not occurred to us it would be classified as significant risk device." Researchers seek to use CardioPump in larger study CHICAGO (AP) Heart attack victims who were immediately treated with a device resembling a toilet plunger were more likely to survive than those who received standard CPR, a study found. Despite the promising results, research was cut short midway through the study because the Food and Drug Administration said participants who were in cardiac arrest could not be asked for permission to undergo the experimental care.
